FC Copa Real U14G reaches finals in debut at FC Delco
by posted 05/29/2009

FC Copa Real U14G Finalsit at FC Delco Players Cup 2009

An array of top regional teams from 12 states came together this past weekend for a “clash of the cleats” at the 10th Annual FC Delco Players Cup tournament.

FC Copa Real playing in the Platinum Bracket saw the Alley Cats Ocelots first. The Cats play in the Blue division in Northeast Region Premier League and came in first place ahead of other top teams but could not get past FC Copa Real with a final score of  2-1.  In the second game Real faced the Scorpions from Massachusetts.  This club can boast two top ranked teams in their state. (First and seventh place in their state prior to the weekend.) In addition, the club has produced the top team in Regional Premier play ahead of very strong teams like the PDA Celtics and Levittown United.  Once again, the Real girls played a strong passing game and held the Scorpion SC Premier to a 2-2 tie ending an exciting day of games.

On Sunday in their final pool play match they met Spirit United Frenzy ranked 10 in PAE on NSR. Determined to see the weekend through to the finals the girls rallied and glided into the Semi’s with a 1-0 victory over one of Pennsylvania’s own.  As they prepared to play the North Rockland SA Magic, their determination to make the finals became clear. They remained focused and ready throughout the day as they waited to take the field against the 11th ranked team in NYE.  With two early goals and a score at the half of 3-0, the girls remained unchallenged and went through.

On Monday, they took the field once again against Connecticut’s South Central Premier Lady Owls.  In a tight game with little rhythm the regulation time score remained 1-1 going into overtime.  After two overtime periods the score remained unchanged.  Having left it all on the field in very hot weather the game was decided in PK’s. Although the Real competed valiantly, they came up short and took second place.  All in all it was a successful run in their first FC Delco tournament appearance.

Congratulations girls on a job well done!!!

“It’s not about defeating your opponent…it’s about striving to surpass your previous best each and every time you compete…that’s what makes champions.”

The Virginian - FINALIST

On Friday, May 22 Fuego arrived in Virginia along side 600 teams and 10,000+ players ready to play and bring home a trophy in the U19 Girls College Showcase Gold Division.

Saturday morning brought on the first of 2 nerve-racking 1-0 victories over teams from New York and Maryland.

Sunday both parents and supporters were on the edge of their seats during two more 1-0 victories, but this time over home-town Virginia teams. Fuego won their bracket with a 4-0 record.

Monday morning, Fuego set their sights on the prize; an international show-down with Canadian team North Mississauga Panthers, whose 2-1-1 record brought them to the division finals. After regulation play ended the score was 1-1. Looking ahead to another 20 minutes of play, Fuego was ready. In the end after 100 total minutes of play, Fuego lost a hard fought game, 2-1, coming in second in a division of 13 teams.

FC Copa Real U15 Girls (Fall) Invitational Tryouts
by posted 04/29/2009

FC Copa Real is now holding Invitational Tryouts at team training sessions for select positions on next year's U15G team, which will begin training and competition immediately following the completion of Fall 2009 high school season. The Real is a JAGS/MAPS level team currently ranked in the Top 10 in NJ by GotSoccer and Soccer In College, and was a 2007-8 NJYS State Cup U13G Semi-Finalist. Real participates in a number of high-level tournaments, with the CASL Girl's College Showcase, Disney's Soccer Showcase, Jefferson Cup and the FC Delco Player's Cup on next year's target list. The team will also be looking to play in regional league competition next year, as well as compete in the NJYS National Championships and US Club National Cup tournament series. Real trains at Rutgers University, Busch Campus in Piscataway, NJ.

Girls who are dedicated and committed to furthering their soccer development will find FC Copa and the Real to be their ideal home. We seek to develop players to be capable of playing in college. Our focus is on helping players to reach their maximum potential through a structured, progressive curriculum while looking to peak their performance at around U16 for maximum exposure to the recruiting process. While playing top level competition will be a given, the necessity to win every game is not a goal - we view winning as a result. Part of FC Copa's developmental success derives from a low turnover rate and therefore tryouts for Real this year will be highly competitive for potentially only a couple of positions. We are actively seeking to add a second top-level goalkeeper to the team for next year.

Real is coached by Roberto Aguas, founder, President of FC Copa and Director of Player Development. Coach Roberto is also the coach of the U16B Forza who are two time NJ State Cup champions, last year's US Club National Finalist and who are ranked #1 in NJ by all 3 major ranking services. The same progressive curriculum is being followed by Real. Coach Roberto has over 20 years experience coaching youth teams and has been training and coaching Real for over 6 years from its earliest small-sided beginnings.

To be considered for a tryout invitation, please complete our Evaluation Information Form at http://fccopa.com/Page.asp?n=11112&snid=189647591&org=fccopa.com. You will then be contacted with with further details. Training sessions in May will be held on Fri 5/1 6-7:30pm, Wed 5/6 from 6-7:30pm, Wed 5/13 7-8:30pm, Fri 5/15 6-7:30pm and Wed 5/20 6-7:30pm.

FC Copa Selected to NEW US Club Northeast Regional League
by posted 04/29/2009

FC Copa has been selected as a founding member of the new US Club Soccer’s Northeast Regional League, with U15B FC Copa Boca and U16B FC Copa Forza playing double headers in the new FC Copa Summer Program.  The league will kick off in late May and go through July.

“We are honored at the distinction of being named as one of the inaugural clubs in the Northeast Regional League,” said Roberto Aguas, President and Founder of FC Copa. “Participation in the league will not only solidify the public view of FC Copa as a premier choice for selecting a club/team that provides the highest levels of development and competitive opportunities, but it will allow us to compete with like-minded, development-focused teams at the highest level.”

All teams will play each opponent once with the qualifying teams participating in a season-ending playoff, and the champion determined based on cumulative points at the end of the regular season. Consistent with the other US Club Soccer regional leagues, the emphasis of the Northeast Regional League is on player development.

“We not only look forward to having our U-15 and U-16 boys’ teams participating in this inaugural season, but being able to expand our participation to our other U-14 to U-17 boys’ and girls’ teams in future seasons,” Aguas said. “Our goal would be to have an FC Copa team participating in every age/gender group in the league as it progresses.” “We have been strong supporters of US Club Soccer because of its efforts to remove a lot of the bureaucracy that surrounds youth soccer in the United States today,” Aguas added. “The Northeast Regional League continues this tradition in offering the highest levels of competition within the region, while minimizing costs and administrative issues.”

The clubs selected to participate in the inaugural season are:

Black Watch Premier (N.Y.)
Boston Blast FC (Mass.)
FC Bucks (Pa.)
FC Copa (N.J.)
JBS FC (N.Y./Conn.)
Jersey United (N.J.)
PDA (N.J.)
Soccer Plus Academy Nirvana (N.Y)

As a result of the considerable interest expressed in US Club Soccer playing a more direct role in league development, the organization announced in September that it would begin selectively administering its own regional leagues. The Northeast Regional League is the third of these leagues to come to fruition.

Both the U15B Boca and the U16B Forza will be having open training session to select additional players to compete in the US Club Northeast Regional League as part of its summer SOL program.  If you are interested in being considered please complete our online evaluation form and we will contact you with details.

FC Copa Forza U16B to attend the prestigious Dallas Cup
by posted 04/03/2009

The FC Copa Forza U16B depart on Saturday on their way to Dallas to compete in the internationally famous Dallas Cup

In another new and exciting chapter for FC Copa, we will have our first representatives from the club competing at the 2009 Dallas Cup.  The FC Copa Forza U16B team, their coaching staff and a contingent of supporters and family will be departing on a 3 1/2 hour flight this Saturday, April 4th on their way to Texas.  The 8 day Dallas Cup International Youth Soccer Tournament, one of the most prestigious and largest youth tournaments in the world, will celebrate its 30th Anniversary during the week of April 5 - 12, 2009. Its reputation over the years has attracted many of the top international and USA clubs who have sent their premier youth teams to compete in the week long tournament held each year in Dallas, Texas.

The Elite U19 Super Group has hosted the who’s who of world soccer with Real Madrid, Sao Paulo, River Plate, Manchester United, Ajax, Club America, Chelsea, Eintracht Frankfurt, Moscow Dynamo and Liverpool being just some of the clubs that have sent the cream of their young talent to represent them at Dallas Cup. The list of outstanding world renowned players that commenced their soccer careers playing in the Dallas Cup is a tremendous credit to the esteem in which the tournament is held throughout the world of soccer. David Beckham, Raul, Michael Owen, Robinho, Wayne Rooney, Landon Donovan, Howard Kewell, Kleberson, Jamie Moreno, Rafael Garcia and Claudio Reyna all showed their talents as young players on the soccer fields of Dallas.

This year the field is no different from years past as many international teams will grace the soccer pitch this time around. Teams competing this year come to the event from the following clubs: AC Milan (Italy), Tigres (Mexico), Manchester City FC (England), Sao Paulo FC (Brazil), River Plate (Argentina) and CF Monterrey (Mexico). There are also teams from Trinidad & Tobago, Netherlands, Costa Rica, Canada, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Barbados and South Africa, as well as many of the top teams from US Clubs.  The FC Copa Forza was placed in the A bracket of the U16B group and will compete against three quality teams, two of whom they have met before. First, the Forza will play Ajax Gunners (Canada), in a rematch of a game the Forza lost 1-0 in late fall, next up is Santa Clara Sporting (California),  the team which edged the Forza, 2 - 1 in a very exciting US Club National Cup final last summer in Virginia Beach and the final group match is with the FC Milwaukee Blue (Wisconsin),

In addition to the great competition, the tournament provides a great opportunity for exposure for the players.  With over 100 Universities sending representatives as well as many international scouts and agents in attendance, the players have a chance to be seen at the highest level. The tournament is also a great magnet for top FIFA referees who all covet the opportunity to work in both the electrifying atmosphere of these games as well as on the pristine fields.

All of this gets kicked off on Sunday with the renowned Dallas Cup "Olympic style" Opening Ceremonies.  The march into Pizza Hut Park Stadium allows each team to proudly represent their club, state and country.  It is also a great opportunity to see all the teams that will be competing in one place and to exchange pleasantries with players from all over the world.

If you would like to follow the daily action from Dallas, Matty Berman, a player on the Forza, will once again publish a daily blog recounting the preparation, events, activities and ultimately the games themselves.  You can see the daily blog on our home page with the archives accessible via this link.

We are proud of the success the team has achieved as well as the exposure the players, the team and the club continue to enjoy.  All of us here at FC Copa want to wish the Forza great success as they depart on yet another chapter of their soccer journey and we will be cheering you on loudly from NJ!

GO FC Copa FORZA!

FC Copa Forza - 2 time NJ State Cup Futsal Champions

We would like to congratulate the FC Copa Forza U16B for a great accomplishment this weekend, they were crowned NJ State Cup Futsal champions for a second year in a row.

In a bracket full of very talented teams from all around the state, the Forza Futsal team, played very disciplined and inspired as they got through the preliminary round with with two wins and one loss.  In the semi finals the team played a very talented LSTS Futsal team which always means an exciting game is in order, this one did not disappoint, as the game went into overtime and was finally decided in penalty kicks when our keeper saved the 8th penalty kick.  The final was a very competitive and exciting match vs. Parsippany which ended in a 2-1 win. Both teams showing great technical abilities.

We are proud of the Forza's accomplishment in what proved to be the best level of competition in this age group to date.

The entire FC Copa family would like to wish the team the best of luck as they travel to the US Futsal Regional Championship in February.

The FC Copa Forza U16B (nationally ranked 6th by Got Soccer) flew south this winter to attended the #1 Tournament in the US, the 2009 Disney Soccer Showcase presented by Chelsea Footbal Club in Orlando, FL.

56 of the top U16B teams in the country were accepted to compete this year, the teams were allocated into 7 brackets, with FC Copa Forza being placed in the top bracket this year after a very successful U15 year.

The team got off to a tough start with a 1-0 loss with minutes to go in the game, but then rebounded strong as they won their next two preliminary round games against some tough competition.  Unfortunately, the Forza was not able to advance to the finals, as one goal made the difference this year.

The team ended the week with a 4th place finish amongst 56 of the best team in the country.  We want to congratulate the Forza players and coaches on their success and wish them well this Spring.

Welcome back our Director of Administration...

We are delighted to announce that after a year long hiatus Susan Manno has returned as the Director of Administration for FC Copa.  Susan was invaluable when we founded FC Copa and was critical in its growth as more structure, processes and discipline was required in the administrative side.

Effective immediately Susan, as the Director of Administration, will be responsible for all player and team carding (both NJYS and US Club), player tuition processing and collection and tournament registrations amongst many other duties.

We could not be more excited to have Susan back and for many of you that know her level of detail and passion for what we stand for, I am sure you are happy as well.

Susan is already hard at work as we start to ramp up the U15 to U18 season. Lets welcome her back!

by posted 10/21/2008

FC Copa announces its 2008-9 Winter Academy Program, geared for younger players currently playing on non-FC Copa teams to train and compete in an indoor turf league and tournament between fall and spring seasons.  We’re looking for the U11 and U12 girl as well as U11 boys who are committed to developing their soccer skills and want to continue training and playing over the winter.  An informational training session will be held this Sun from 4:00 - 5:00pm in Somerset.  All FC Copa siblings as well as friends of FC Copa families in these age groups are encouraged to attend - please pass on this information.

We will be seeking to form winter teams for U11G, U12G and U11B.   The program will include a couple of outdoor training sessions in November, once weekly Futsal indoor training December through early March, participation in an indoor turf league (7v7, Soccer Centers), an indoor tournament, and red/white uniform shirts.

If your current team is taking the winter season off, this is the perfect opportunity to receive high-level training from FC Copa’s elite coaching staff and the opportunity to play both indoor 7v7 and Futsal.   All activities of our winter teams will be scheduled so as to not interfere with your current team’s late fall or spring pre-season training and competition.

If you are interested in this opportunity, please complete our evaluation information form at http://leagueathletics.com/Page.asp?n=11112&snid=189647591&org=fccopa.com and come to the training session this Sunday at Middlebush Park in Somerset from 4:00 - 5:00pm  (directions: http://leagueathletics.com/Facility.asp?ID=28274&snid=189647591&org=fccopa.com).  If you are unable to make this Sunday’s session, please complete the information form and let us know so we can invite you to another session.

FC Copa Real U13G Repeats as Lititz Summer Showcase Champions;
Aventura U12G are Finalists

The U13G Real successfully defended their Championship win from a year ago at the Lititz Summer Showcase this past weekend, July 26-27, and completed their summer season winning Championships in two of three tournaments. Real dominated the field through the first three games, scoring 14 goals and giving up none.   A motivated and determined East Hudson Academy side dashed hopes of a clean sweep, but a loss in their final game set up the repeat victory for Real.

Aventura U12 girls also dominated their bracket through three games – scoring 12 goals and only giving up 1. Lady Luck came up 1 goal short in the final game. A win by MOSA Select tied the Aventura in points and set up their tie-breaker victory.

For the second year, the Lititz tournament capped the SOL Summer Premier program season – a fun time for all teams staying together and having a great time on and off the field. This year, all four FC Copa SOL teams stayed at the same hotel - with about half the rooms, FC Copa was visible everywhere. Combine that with great shopping (Lancaster’s outlets; chocolate and pretzel factories), and great local culture and food (PA Dutch family restaurants, smorgasbords, etc), and the weekend offered something for everyone.

Congratulations to the U12G Aventura, U13G Real, U14G Furia, and the U16G Fuego for a great SOL summer season!

FC Copa Real U13G Champions at the Central Jersey Invitational

FC Copa Real U13G Central Jersey Invitational 2008 Champions

The U13G Real overcame a shaky start to win the top flight (MAPS) at the Central Jersey Invitational (Girls Weekend) Tournament on July 12 and 13. After advancing to the semi-finals, Real stepped up their game to defeat the previously unbeaten Erin Mills Mighty Eagles from Ontario, Canada. A win on PK’s in the other semi-final by LIJSL ODP set up a first-game rematch between the two teams for the Final. Revenge was clearly on Real’s mind having suffered a 2-1 defeat at the hands of LIJSL in the opening game. This time it was all Real, with a great team effort setting up Amber Adams to deliver the 3-0 hat trick. Congratulation Real!

Congratulations are also due to the four FC Copa girls teams competing in this tournament. An added feature of the Central Jersey Invitational is the MAPS Cup. Clubs and Academy’s who have entered at least three teams are in the running, with points accumulated for placement in each age bracket. FC Copa finished a very respectable 7th of 15 Clubs and Academies competing for the honor.

CONGRATULATIONS FC Copa Forza U15B 2008 US Club Regional Champs

FC Copa Forza U15B - 2008 US Club Regional Champions

FC Copa would like to congratulate the U15B Forza on their outstanding accomplishment this weekend, the Forza competed in the US Club Regional B Championship's U15B Super Group.  The title came via a very competitive road which included some of the top teams in the region.  To be crowned champs the team went 5-0 with 16 goals for and 4 against.  The consistent defensive toughness of the team lead the way allowing only 1 goal in two of their games and an even tougher semis and finals where they kept a clean sheet with both being shutouts.  The defensive toughness was supported by a very explosive offense which scored 16 goals, for an average of 3+ goals a game.  We are all very proud of the team this year as they not only took home a Regional Championship, but also gained a national ranking.

The journey will continue for the Forza as they now begin preparing to compete at US Club Nationals in Virginia Beach on July 26th to the 28th.  We would like to wish the entire team, its coaches, managers and parents the best and look forward to having the Forza represent FC Copa at a national stage.

FC Copa Classico U17B are State Cup Finalists!
by posted 05/21/2008

Last Sunday, May 18th the U17 Boys FC Copa Classico played in the New Jersey State Championship Game.  They played a fantastic game but eventually succumbed to the #3 ranked team in the country, PDA Cruyff.

On the way to the title game they defeated Wenona, World Class and TSF.  The semi final on Saturday against TSF was an exciting one that was finally decided in overtime.  In the first half of the game and after giving up an early goal the Classico roared back with the equalizer coming from a blast off the foot of Shane Conlin just two minutes later.  Little did anyone know that, with the Classico missing numerous chances and having the far better of play, the score would remain the same until the end of regulation. This wasn't to stay that way for long though as just two minutes into the extra stanza Kevin Shaw beat his man around the right bi-line and with very little angle fired a rocket into the roof of the net from 10 yards out.  In the second half of overtime Ian Buzio provided the insurance goal as the Classico went ahead 3-1.  This goal proved to be critical since with 3 minutes remaining the team gave up a goal that made the final score 3-2

In the final, the Classico clearly came out focused and not intimidated by their opponents lofty ranking.  They played hard and dominated the first half much to the surprise of many in the huge crowd who had never seen our boys play. Unfortunately an early goal led to a first half deficit of 1-0.  We had our chances though as Alec Taylor hit a screamer from the right corner of the box that ricocheted back across the face of the goal off the upper left post with a shot that the keeper could only watch and that most thought when struck was going in.  A couple minutes later Corey Adams had a terrific header off a corner, that was rocketed and headed for the back of the net, but was parried by the keeper.  Danny Mendoza, Shane Conlin and Mike Jolibois all had opportunities that fell short.  The second half was more of an even affair although the interior of the Classico midfield (Shaw, Mendoza and Ryan Casallas) continued to work hard and persevere.  Unfortunately the constant effort being expended to gain the equalizer combined with the much deeper PDA bench was starting to take its toll and the eventual backbreaker came midway through the second stanza leaving the boys facing what was a huge deficit against a team of this calibre, 2-0.  The defense was stellar all day, the back four of Matt Poole and Tim Dragon on the wings and Corey Adams and Chris Nelson in the interior.  Matt Parrella and TJ Mack split time in goal as they have done all season.  Dan Sauerhoff and Ian Douglas provided much needed relief as the game wore on.  A late goal when all was already lost made the final score 3-0, hardly indicative of the type of game that had transpired.

All in all it was a great State Cup run by the Classico and something that we all are very proud of.  Congratulations to Coach TJ Kostecky and the boys!  Next up for them is the Potomac Invitational this weekend, The US Club Regionals and Score at the Shore in North Carolina in July.  It should be noted that seniors on the team are already committed to playing in college  next year and the vast majority who are juniors are all in contact with schools who will be scouting them over the next few events.

Good luck to all the boys and thanks for what so far has been a memorable season!

Two Championship Wins at 2008 YMS EPIC

FC Copa Real U13G and Fúria U14G Win YMS EPIC Tournament

Both the U13G Real and the U14G Fúria and the U12G Aventura went undefeated for the weekend (with Real having a perfect 4-0-0 and giving up only 1 goal and Fúria finishing at 3-0-1) on the road to dual Championships at the YMS Eastern Pennsylvania Invitational Classic (EPIC) on Mother's Day weekend 2008.  Real's highlight game came in the Finals match against PA Rush, with both teams scoreless at the end of regulation time AND two golden-goal overtime periods -- it came down to penalty kicks and the combination of 3 brilliant saves and well-placed penalty kicks brought home the championship.  The Fúria overcame a first game tie against Ewing to hold their remaining opponents scoreless and then win the Finals match 2-0 against a strong Ukrainian Nationals side.  All five FC Copa girls' teams were in action at this year's EPIC, with all having a great weekend - the U12G Aventura advancing to the finals and narrowly losing to the GCVSA Twisters in golden-goal overtime, and the U15G Viento narrowly losing to Princeton on penalty kicks in an exciting semi-final match.

Spring 2008 FC Copa Goalkeeper Academy
by posted 04/10/2008

We are happy to announce the dates for the Spring 2008 FC Copa's Goalkeeper Academy.

Sessions for all FC Copa goalkeepers from U11 to U17, will begin this Friday, April 11th and will continue on Fridays throughout the months of May and June.  All training will take place at University Park  field at Rutgers University.  Exact times for the sessions will be emailed to the goalkeepers by the Director of Goalkeeping Mike Taylor.

This spring we will continue on building goalkeeping leadership for FC Copa. Our four key elements this season will be:

  1. Dominate the box – winning balls within your range.
  2. Organize the defense – providing instruction and defensive leadership.
  3. Demand the ball – being connected to the back line as an option in and out of the box.
  4. Psych out opponents – having a commanding and aggressive field presence through play and vocal commands.

In order for there to be leadership, there must be respect and trust which is gained by setting an example. By teaching an aggressive and courageous style of goalkeeper play, we can set the proper example, that will build trust and set the path for creating a team leader.

The sessions this season will focus on the following areas:

April 11th

Attacking Mentality I – aggressive / courage / decisiveness.

April 18th

Attacking Mentality II – continuing from previous week with greater emphasis on footwork and required quickness.

April 25th

Attacking Mentality III – ball control and procession while maintaining speed of attack.

May 2nd

Proper positioning and defensive organization using the art of clear and concise direction.

May 9th

Defending set plays – corner kicks, free kicks, penalties. Combining proper positioning with vocal direction.

May 16th

Attacking Crossed Balls I - aggressive / courage / decisiveness.

May 23rd

Attacking Crossed Balls II – extending range to dominate area of play.

June 6th

Distribution / Attack Building – becoming the 11th field player. Managing tempo for game situation.

June 13th

Attacking Mentality IV / summer training review.

The FC Copa Goal Keeper Academy and Training is under the direction of Mike Taylor, FC Copa Director of Goalkeeping. If you have any question please feel free to contact Mike at

We look forward to continuing the development of our goalkeepers this Spring season

FC Copa Forza U15B Wins Baltimore March Madness Tournament

We would like to congratulate and acknowledge the achievement this weekend of the FC Copa Forza U15B for winning the Premier Flight of the U15 Boys Baltimore March Madness Tournament.

While in itself a great achievement, some of the highlights are even more impressive:

  • defeated the #1 Ranked U15B team in the country Saturday afternoon 1-0 – Baltimore Casa Mia Bays ’93 – two time defending USYS National Champions.

  • starting goalkeeper Kevin Motylewski suffered a broken collar bone in the game versus Baltimore while coming out for a game saving punch to clear the ball. Backup goalkeeper Linas Razgaitis stepped in with 12 minutes remaining in the Baltimore game and delivered 2 saves to preserve the win.

  • Forza was in a 3-way tie situation with their third preliminary game on Sunday, needing a 2-goal win AND also requiring no goals being allowed, since a goal against in that third game would have eliminated the team from the finals – they delivered with a 2-0 win over Spirit United Coppa 92s (#11 in the Region, #4 in Pennsylvania).

  • Sunday the Forza won the finals vs. Syracuse FC in PK’s (defending State Cup Champions of New York West,  #1 ranked in New York West State and #14 in the Region) – Linas again stepped up to the challenge delivering saves in the first two PK’s.

  • Amongst the scoring success of the team, we are equally or more proud of the defensive stance which was exhibited by the Forza against this level of competition.  In 4 games, 240 minutes of play, the team allowed 1 goal against.

  • We would like to commend the entire team for their dedication and commitment to each other.  The Forza team which competed this weekend was composed of:

Goalkeepers: Kevin Motylewski and Linas Razgaitis

Defenders: Nick DiSomma, Greg Murray, Owen Buckley, Philip Wong, Andrew Bonaventura and Raymond El-Khoury

    Midfielders:
Joseph Saitta, Matty Berman, Ben Strong, David Trank, Grant Taylor and Joseph Greenspan

Forwards: Christian Floth, Justin Dennis and Luis Colon
Congratulations Forza, you have made FC Copa proud!

Introducing the FC Copa FUTSAL Club
by posted 09/26/2007

FC Copa Futsal ClubFC Copa introduces the formation of the FC Copa Futsal Club, following the successes of the FC Copa Academy, 3v3 Club, Goalkeeper Academy, and SOL Summer Premier programs.

Futsal is FIFA’s officially sanctioned Indoor Soccer game, and traces its beginnings to Uruguay in 1930. Often referred to as “five-a-side”, Futsal is played indoors on basketball-sized hard-surfaced courts. The internationally recognized name FUTSAL is derived from the Spanish or Portuguese word for "soccer", FUTbol or FUTebol, and the French or Spanish word for "indoor", SALon or SALa.

FC Copa Academy teams have been learning and playing the game of Futsal for the past two winters, participating in the Baker Futsal League in Princeton. The formation of the FC Copa Futsal Club will focus on the development of those players with the desire to compete at the state, regional, and national levels in this game.   Academy teams that choose to participate in the optional Winter program will continue to learn and play the game, but will focus more on the benefits in improving ball handling skills derived from playing Futsal than in high-level competition.

FC Copa Futsal Club teams will be formed through competitive tryouts in late October and begin training in November, league play beginning in December and participation in the NJ State Futsal Championships in January. Participation in FC Copa Futsal, like FC Copa 3v3, is distinct from the academy teams and will require player and parent dedication and commitment independent of participation on the academy teams.

More information on Futsal is available from the United States Futsal Federation and NJ Futsal.

The 8 Nutritional Areas to Focus On
by posted 01/26/2007

The 8 Nutritional Areas to Focus On

Nutrition is something you can control, something you can choose to improve or not. Optimal nutrition is all about getting back to basics and following simple strategies. Don't make it complicated; just focus on the following 10 areas, and you'll enhance your recovery, improve your performance and maximize your energy in 2007!

  1. Come back to earth! Try to choose the least processed forms of carbohydrates. Your body will perform better on more efficient fuel. Fruits, veggies and whole grains (whole-wheat bread, brown rice and whole-wheat pasta) give you more stable energy levels than more processed foods like chips, soda, white bread and candy.
  2. Eat breakfast every day. The longer you wait to eat breakfast, the longer you'll be running in low gear. Eating breakfast jump-starts your metabolism.
  3. Eat smaller portions more often, spread evenly across the day. No excuses: You should be eating five to eight meals a day, combining protein, carbs, and healthy fats at each meal. Think "three for three": all three nutrients every three hours. An easy way to do this is to pack snacks from home and keep them close at hand. If you stay fueled throughout the day, you'll perform better at practice and games.
  4. Stay hydrated. Dehydration means decreased performance. Drink at least half your body weight in ounces of water per day, and think before you drink: Stick mainly to water, switching to 100% fruit juice every once in a while. Use sports drinks only before, during or after activity.
  5. Eat lean protein at each meal. Remember, "the fewer legs, the better." Fish have no legs and are a lean source of protein. Chickens and turkeys have two legs and are great protein sources if you take off their skin and don't fry them. Be selective when choosing products that come from cows and pigs (four-legged animals): Choose lean red meats and low-fat dairy products.
  6. Eat fruits or vegetables at each meal. Fruits and vegetables provide you with natural antioxidants, vitamins and minerals.
  7. Have a mixture of carbs and protein after every workout. Recovery is one of the limiting factors of performance. If you get a combination of carbs and protein immediately after a game or workout, you get a jump start on repairing your muscles and refueling your body. Try a shake or bar for optimized nutrition and convenience.
  8. Last, but not least: Get some rest! The body recovers and repairs while it's sleeping. Try to get eight hours of sleep each night. Players who don't get enough rest tend to get injured and sick more often than those who are adequately rested.

FC Copa Sideline Guidelines
by posted 10/27/2006

As the winter approaches and we all start to get a bit cold in the sidelines, we tend to find ways to keep us warm.  One of those ways is for parents to pace up and down the field, coaching from the sideline.  Well it is probably a good time for us to remind everyone of our guidelines.

The proper guidelines to follow from the sideline is that all cheering should be post action statements; "good shot", "nice try", "good run", "great hustle".  Focus on making statements that will support the players efforts after they have performed them and not before.  When you instruct, most players are likely to be confused and/or embarrassed. As you will see below, in the great real world example, that it is very difficult to think on your own if someone is constantly on you!  Enjoy and absorb the exchange between this Mother and Child!

Here is an exchange that was sent to the Club by one of our coaches.  It clearly puts in perspective the issues caused by parents when they coach from the sideline.  At FC Copa we clearly articulate to all parents, when they join the club, to refrain 100% from coaching.

Coaching from a teenage son

A mother was making a breakfast of fried eggs for her teenage son. Suddenly the boy bursts into the kitchen.

"Careful! Careful! Put in some more butter! Oh my goodness! You're cooking too many at once.

TOO MANY! Turn them! TURN THEM NOW! We need more butter. Oh my! WHERE are we going to get MORE BUTTER? They're going to STICK! Careful!.CAREFUL! I said CAREFUL! You NEVER listen to me when you're cooking! Never! Turn them! Hurry up! Are you crazy?

Have you lost your mind? Don't forget to salt them. You know you always forget to salt them. Use the salt. USE THE SALT! THE SALT!"

The mother stared at him. "What's wrong with you? You think I don't now how to fry a couple of eggs?"

The son calmly replied, "I just wanted to show you what it feels like when I'm trying to play soccer."
