FUTSAL RECAP - B03 BLACK STATE FINALISTS, G03 BLACK AND B01 BLACK STATE SEMI-FINALISTS
On Saturday, February 10th, three different FC Copa Futsal Academy teams placed in the Futsal State Championships. The B03 Black walked away as State Finalists, while the G03 Black and the B01 Black both finished as State Semi-Finalists.
“We’re really happy for all three teams- the B03 Black, the G03 Black and the B01 Black- for their State Cup tournaments this weekend,” explained Director of the FC Copa Futsal Academy Andrew Giallombardo. “We faced off against some really fierce competition, which is awesome leading up to the US Futsal Regionals this weekend. I’m looking forward to seeing how all three teams step up to the plate this weekend in Atlantic City.”
The B03 Black started off group play with a commanding 7-2 win over Matchfit Black, before snagging another 7-3 win over DTS in their second game. Rounding off group play with a 4-1 win over American Futsal Academy, the B03 Black remained undefeated and finished atop their bracket. In the Semi-Finals, the B03 Black upended Matchfit White from the other bracket, 6-2, to book their ticket to the State Finals, where they would eventually fall 7-4 to STA.
“The B03 Black were fantastic all tournament,” Coach Andrew Santos said. “They played with confidence and took it to every single team they faced. For a young team, they went up against a lot of adversity this weekend and showed true grit and determination. We’re really looking forward to the US Futsal Regional Championships with this group this weekend.”
Getting started in the later time slot was the G03 Black, who opened up group play with a fiercely contested 4-3 win over YESA Academy. They then topped Parsippany SC 4-0 before venue issues changed the plans of the tournament. With heavy rain causing the ceiling of the Fields Complex to leak substantially, two of the courts were closed due to player safety concerns and the third group game was scrapped, moving the G03 Black directly into the Semi-Finals after finishing atop their group. Going up against the eventual State Champions in the OGS Samba Queens, the G03 Black fell 6-2, finishing as Semi-Finalists.
“These are the types of tests we want in the weekend ahead of the Regional Championships,” explained Coach Roberto Aguas. “The teams we faced in States were great to help prepare us for this upcoming weekend. I’m proud of the work the girls put in this past weekend, and I’m looking forward to seeing them defend their 2017 US Futsal Regional Championship in Atlantic City over President’s Day.”
The eldest team to represent FC Copa Futsal Academy in their respective State Cup Tournament was the B01 Black. Starting off with a tough loss 6-3 against Player Technique Academy, the B01 Black finished group play with a 5-4 loss to Strikers FC and a dominating 8-0 win over STA. This secured their spot as second in the group, which earned them a spot in the Semi-Finals. The B01 Black would fall in a tightly contested match against AFA Fabio, 3-2, finishing their run as State Semi-Finalists.
“The B01 Black got better each game,” said Coach Andrew Giallombardo. “They really grew together as a group, going up against some really good teams. The State Cup tournament has definitely helped prepare us for the Regional Championships this weekend- we’re really excited for this group to go down to Atlantic City and show what they’ve got.”
FC Copa Academy congratulates all the competing teams from Futsal State Cup this weekend, especially the B03 Black on their State Finalist finish and the G03 Black and B01 Black on their Semi-Finalist finish!
