Last weekend, March 16th-18th, five different FC Copa Academy teams represented the academy in the Jefferson Cup Girls Weekend, a top-rated national tournament. Teams that showcased their skills at the Richmond-based tournament were, G07 Black, G06 Black South, G06 Black, G05 Black, and G04 Black.
The U12 G06 Black South finished as champions. In group play they defeated Charlotte SA, 3-1, and Cuyahoga Valley, 2-1, before knocking off SAC Premier 5-1 in the semifinals and Inter Atlanta FC 2-1 in the championship.
“We are so proud of how the girls played this weekend,” said Coach Justin Abbey. “They played with confidence and had undeniable team chemistry, which was displayed by how they played and how they placed.”
G06 Black completed a successful two-win-weekend as semifinalists. They won their first game 3-2 against Liverpool FC followed by a convincing 2-0 win over the Richmond Kickers. Despite leading in the final game of the weekend, G06 Black fell to FC Bucks 3-1 and fell just short of a finals appearance.
“This was one of the most composed I have seen this group,” explained Coach Matty Berman. “The girls played well technically, smart tactically, and exhibited the fierce intensity this group is known for.”
At the U14 level- the oldest age group represented last weekend at Jefferson Cup- FC Copa G04 Black was able to avenge two hard fought first day losses by persevering for a thrilling 2-1 Sunday win over Syracuse DA.
G05 Black also found their rhythm on Sunday as they defeated Virginia Rush 3-2 to head home on a winning note. “Playing in such a prestigious tournament was an honor for our team,” said Coach Andrew Giallombardo. “It pushed our team to see the great competition that is out there so that we can train hard for upcoming games. It was an overall great experience for our girls on and off the field.
In their first out-of-state tournament, U11 G07 Black were given an invaluable learning experience maintaining a busy schedule of team meetings, meals, and matches. Despite enduring three losses on the weekend, the team comes home poised for a successful spring.
“We are extremely proud of the teams that competed at the Jefferson Cup this weekend.” said Executive Director of Coaching Roberto Aguas. “We love the fight that all of our girls teams and coaches brought to Virginia! . As one of the top competitions in the country, the girls got to play against some amazing teams, spend quality time together bonding and continuing to grow together on and off the field."
FC Copa Academy congratulates all the competing teams from the Jefferson Cup this weekend, especially the U12 G06 Black South on their finish as Jefferson Cup Champions.
