TWO FC COPA ACADEMY TEAMS CHAMPIONS AT 2019 POTOMAC MEMORIAL DAY TOURNAMENT

Updated: Sep 9, 2019

The FC Copa Boys 2003 NL and Boys 2007 Pre NL teams came home from the Potomac Memorial Day Tournament on Monday with Championship Trophies after winning their title games with incredible heart, skill and tactical focus!

The B2003 NL had a great weekend at the Potomac Memorial Day Weekend Showcase bringing home the championship trophy after winning 4 straight matches against some top ranked east coast talent. The boys began the weekend strong on Saturday with two wins over Barcelona USA (MD) and Blackwatch Premier (NY) and then again on Sunday morning with a victory over Westmont United (PAE). Every player played a huge role in the undefeated pool play setting them up for a final on Monday against a quality Century V 2003 Gold (PAW) team who had also gone undefeated in their first three matches of the weekend.

The final match was a showcase of great talent, tactics and effort on the part of both teams.  Century V 2003 Gold went up 1 early in the second half, forcing Copa to push and change tactics in order to go for the win. The result was an amazing two goals in the final 4 minutes to bring home the championship!  Congratulations boys on weekend filled with victories on and off the field with great games, memorable bonding time and the continued focus on a culture of brotherhood!

Coach Roberto Aguas said, "What a weekend for this special group of boys! We have been working incredibly hard for months with the emphasis on accountability and togetherness and this tournament demonstrated the tremendous ongoing effort these young men have put in.  Every player played a major role in this title and we are incredibly proud!"

For their efforts this weekend, Josh Noble and Jake Gershon were noted in the soccerwire.com post tournament "Players That Impressed" honors. https://www.soccerwire.com/blog-posts/potomac-memorial-tournament-2019-players-that-impressed/

The B2007 Pre NL team had an amazing weekend taking home the Championship at the Potomac Memorial Day Tournament! The team began Saturday morning with a tie against DC Stoddert DCST (VA) before coming back later that afternoon with a fast paced win over MWUSC Lightning (NYE), 5 - 3. Sunday morning brought a tough loss to Achilles Football FC (MD), but the boys came back in the afternoon refreshed and ready to go, beating Potomac Blue (MD) 1 - 0, securing their place in the final on Monday!

The final Monday was a rematch of the Saturday game against Achilles Football FC, which had beaten us the previous day. The team was very ready to avenge this loss with some tactical adjustments and great focus catching Achilles Football FC a bit off guard scoring the lone goal of the game in the first 15 minutes of the game. All of the players contributed tremendously to this victory and we congratulate the team on a fantastic weekend of soccer and friendship!

Coach Andrew Santos said "The boys were fantastic all weekend. This was our first year attending the Potomac Tournament and we had the opportunity to play against very good teams pushing our level each day. Each game we grew, learned and built on the performances we had. It was great to see the team earn that title at the end of the weekend, they deserved it."
