Girls' 2006 Black National League Recap

Updated: Feb 12, 2020

Coach Matty Berman and the Girls 2006 NL Black team had an impressive showing in their National League debut this year. They traveled down to Boca Raton, Florida back in November to play 4 games against some of the best teams from around the country. The girls will look to finish off group play strong in March after recording a 2-2 record and sitting only 3 points behind the group leader, FC Dallas 06 DPL.

In their first game, our girls played against a tough FC Westlake 06 team who are ranked #5 in Texas South and were crowned the 2019 Texas South State Cup Champions. Courtney Irwin and Hailey “Santi” Santiago scored a goal apiece and propelled the team to a 2-1 victory for their first ever National League win.

The girls followed up their first ever win with another strong performance and another goal from Courtney Irwin, who scored the only goal in a 1-0 win over nationally ranked MRM Academy Coyotes Blue 06G. The Coyotes are currently 5th in the nation and ranked first in Maryland. After two games, the girls had their first ever wins in the National League and became the youngest FC Copa team to win two National League games.

After a successful first two days, Coach Matty’s team continued to play well, however, they could not find a win. They lost to FC Dallas, current group leaders with 9 points, by a score of 2-1 in a very close game. Katelyn Figueiredo scored the lone goal for FC Copa, who could not find an equalizer but continued to threaten to score throughout the game.

Their fourth and final game of this round of National League games was another close 2-1 loss to FC United 2006 Pre-Academy out of Illinois. Courtney Irwin scored her third goal of the campaign, which is tied for third in the Top Scorers race. Irwin, Coach Matty Berman, and the G06 NL Black team are looking forward to improving this winter before the second round of National League games, starting March 20th in Las Vegas, Nevada.
